As many in the United States of America were celebrating the traditional national holiday of Thanksgiving, I sat down in front of my computer to find out more about this major national event.

The Thanksgiving holiday is an annual national holiday observed in Canada and the United States. Thanksgiving is closely related to the Harvest festivals. In Canada, where the harvest generally ends earlier in the year, the holiday is celebrated on the second Monday in October. In the United States, the holiday is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November.

The first North American celebration of these festivals, an old custom of Europe, was held in Newfoundland by Martin Frobisher and the Frobisher Expedition in 1578.

Another such festival was marked in 1619 when 38 colonists from Berkeley Parish in England disembarked in Virginia and gave thanks to God.

Thanksgiving is traditionally celebrated in big urban areas as well as in small rural towns with a dinner shared among friends and family.

In both Canada and the United States, it is an important family gathering, and people often travel long distances to be with their loved ones to mark this occasion.

Thanksgiving holidays are not only the means of family get-together but to support the North American agriculture and livestock industry and to celebrate achievements of its hard working men and women.

Pakistan, that is basically an agricultural country, has to take some initiatives to support the agriculture and livestock industry and to celebrate achievements of its hard working farm worker men and women in rural areas on national level.

Such an event can also be beneficial to bring urban and rural population together and of course an occasion of saying thanks to Almighty Allah for all his blessings upon us.
